This county should be in the vanguard -- and still can, if Smith and the supervisors do all they can to take politics out of it. A Blue Ribbon Commission on jail reform chaired by retired Judge LaDoris Cordell wrapped up its good work this month and deposited 121 recommendations in the laps of the county supervisors. And without independent oversight, we have no confidence reforms will hold up.Board of Supervisors President Dave Cortese has said oversight is a priority.
