Money Euro crisis: Bank hits back at Germany over rate row

Politicians in Germany have been attacking the ECB's policy of negative interest rates, which is damaging the income of savers and pensioners. But the the Bank's president has again hit back and said rates are low because Germans are saving TOO much. And then added: "There is a temptation to conclude that since very low rates generate these challenges, they are the problem."But they are not the problem.

Kohl, who was German leader for 16 years and oversaw the reunification of his divided  country, took a swipe at the woman he chose as his successor after remaining silent on the issue since the crisis began.He commented in a newspaper at the weekend: "Europe cannot become a new home for the millions of people in need throughout the world."National policies of the lone-knight variety must be left in the past.

Number of Germany asylum seekers doubles

Of those who have applied for asylum this year, almost half were ­Syrians.More than six in 10 applications were approved, the Interior ­Ministry said today. The number of applications was 60,000 in March, up 87 per cent on March 2015.Iraqis and Afghans were the second and third largest groups in the first quarter.
