Santa Clara County looks at bond measure for affordable housing

Homeless advocates said that while the county provides services to its poorest residents, there is a critical need to add more affordable housing. "Is it worth $84 a year to you to seriously take on homelessness and housing affordability when you know that the lack of that initiative is going to impact residential property values?"Initially, the board considered a sales tax to fund affordable housing.

Herhold: David Whittum's resignation will cost Sunnyvale

His reasons were not overwhelmingly persuasive."I am concluding that I am not physically able to sustain my present commitments to support a heavy workload, on top of council work and meetings frequently lasting eight hours and running past 1 a.m.," Whittum wrote.The resignation took his colleagues by surprise. Herhold: What's the fight between Laurie Smith and LaDoris Cordell really about?

Since then, with the blessing of the board of supervisors, the blue-ribbon Cordell commission has been hearing testimony about jail problems. A few hours before the fight, the two had met at Hobee's in Palo Alto, and Smith tried to persuade Cordell to moderate the commission's recommendations. The blue-ribbon commission has made 120 recommendations -- everything from installing an independent auditor to improving the inmate welfare fund. She suspended other guards who had exchanged racist messages.
